10 years ago, Mad Men began a story of men who tried to change — and the women who actually did

Leave it to Mad Men mastermind Matthew Weiner to throw his audience a ninth-inning curve ball by introducing a major character to his drama series in the final few episodes. The cosmic coincidence is not lost on Don, also a N. And in the first two episodes of the final Mad Men run, we watch as our hopelessly melancholy Mad Man is magnetically drawn to this similarly anguished waitress in a way that our handsome protagonist has never been drawn to a female character before. He seeks her out so plainly—a seeming violation of the Don Draper Dating Discretion Code—that the dynamic between the two feels unprecedented and bizarre, especially given that this minimum-wage-netting brunette is more modest than most of his previous flames. Roger barely looks at her in her introductory restaurant scene. And Sylvia and Arnold mostly ignore her in the elevator.

Mad Men has a fantastic ensemble cast and because of that determining a true lead role isn’t the easiest. However, two characters very much dominate the show with their stories and that is Don Draper and Peggy Olson, who are certainly the main characters from the start to finish. While most people might automatically assume that Don is the lead role, simply because he gets the most screentime it isn’t actually that simple.

Throughout the show, Peggy’s story becomes just as important and therefore an argument can certainly be made that Mad Men is actually all about her.

(Don Draper) Gets Turned Down Twice On Terrible 90s Dating Show I’m not a gay guy, but all the girls seem to love Don Draper/Jon.

GROSS: With only two episodes left, Don Draper, who had been concealing his real identity, has just had his professional identity changed against his will. The characters we’ve come to know, at least those of them who survived the layoffs, are being forced to move into McCann’s building and play by its rules. These shifts have left all the main characters in crisis. Before I go any further, if you watch the show but aren’t caught up, I want you to know that our interview will have some spoilers about last Sunday’s episode, but you’re not in danger of finding out how the series ends because there’s no way Matthew Weiner is going to tell us.

In addition to creating this series, he’s the showrunner, wrote many of the episodes and directed the remaining two. He also worked on “The Sopranos” as a writer and producer.

Dating a Don Draper-type is maddening

She admitted that she was of “French extraction.

It’s hard to believe we’re looking down an empty elevator shaft? The first half of season seven, with its spooky Megan moments, Don-destruction, and Roger slipping in the mud on a farm, for crying out loud, pretty much spun me around so hard, I have no clue where we’ll end up. And I have no clue what will happen to Don—it’s almost like since Walter White died, he has to stay alive, or AMC will end up becoming the network of classy dramas built on disgruntled men who perish in the show’s final moments.

But I do think he’s going to die, and I’ve been giving some thought to who might show up to his funeral. Here are all the exes, flings, and flirts that marked Don’s fertile years—ranked as I liked them as women, which is to say according to none of the criteria Don found important. Bobbie Barrett was just the worst, and I think even Don knew it when you start an affair while you’re at dinner with your wife, that’s a cry for help. She just annoyed the hell out of me: the voice, the lingerie, the heavy-lidded act.

I have seen Anne Bancroft, Ms. I’m not a fan of Sylvia. Boo hoo, your husband’s a nice cardiologist. Also, how dare you chill in Megan’s kitchen, letting her confide in you, when you’re sleeping with her man on the sly?

The seventh and final season of AMC’s celebrated series has come to an end. And sadly, it landed with a resounding thud. [Warning: Spoilers].

The ground had given way beneath his polished loafers, and down, down, down went Don to a place he not only deserved, but possibly fancied. Through the windows of his Madison Avenue offices, the ace adman had seen the world he knew — the slick, macho world of s corporate America — vanish, and with it went the bravura falsehoods of his own life. We left him having a breakdown, brought on by an unaccustomed brush with truth.

This week, as the landmark television drama begins its final, episode run, we will learn the extent of his fall. Is Don finished, or will he discover, like Dante, that the path to redemption begins in purgatory? Far from being the era of permissiveness, the Sixties signalled the moment the world went Puritan, sounding the last hurrah for a wanton culture of expense-account boozing, back-corridor bottom-pinching and glorious disdain for anyone who might be missing out on the spoils of success.

Thus, Mad Men, for all its beauty of detail and phrase, is really an epitaph for the lost world of white, middle-class male privilege, and its genius is in making us admire these men without actually envying their lives. Beyond the next bourbon, the next fitting at Brooks Bros, or three-hour lunch at the Plaza, Don and his kind appear bemused to the point of disinterest by the events that will ultimately bring about their demise. The great upheavals of the Sixties — the Kennedy assassinations, the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War — barely impinge on their perception of the world as a place to be milked for money, thrills and perks.
